I’m not sure how I have managed it but unbelievably I have managed to get to the ripe old age of 33 and I have never decorated my own bedroom. Yes I have decorated rooms in a practical sense – I have opened cans of paint, slopped it on as it should be done, I’ve filled holes, drilled holes and even hung wallpaper, but I have never actually designed a room… perhaps that’s a better way of putting it. Yes I have had input, but as a child obviously there are restrictions and rightly so or it’s highly likely my mum would have ended up with a bedroom in her house painted black or neon pink at some point. As I grew older, I was obviously allowed even more input and I was always happy with the outcome but they never felt like they were truly mine. When I moved out I lived in rented accommodation with A LOT of restrictions and then I obviously ended up back at my mums house where she had just redecorated and now we have left and will be living in rented accommodation. Let’s face it in today’s economic climate I have no chance on buying my own home unless I win the lottery or someone wants to give me one so I have now come to the conclusion that if I want a room to feel truly my own then I’m going to have to work out a way of doing that within the limitations of where I am living…
I spoke to my mum about the fact I wanted to make my room my room and she agreed. I think another thing that has always made it difficult is that I have never had a definitive style and my likes and dislikes have changed A LOT! However, this time I think I have finally figured out what I want… and that is where the new difficult part comes in because it is not very specific. What I want is not a set theme or scheme but is lots of little bits put together cohesively to make me one gorgeous and relaxing space just for me!
Basically I want a room like a cloud – I want pale soft colours, lots of materials draped softly, cushions, a cuddle chair, candles and fairy lights. How they all come together in the room I have no idea but those are the things I want. Of course I am letting my mum help and she has gone to town with a Pinterest board (I swear she could Pin in the Olympics!!) and has done basically what was in my mind and each pin is something I love and would go together.
When moving out of our old house, I got rid of practically all of my furniture as it had been with me so long that it really did need chucking and updating. I feel like I now need investment pieces too, ones that will last a long time and won’t need replacing in a year or two or ones that I can mess up when building it from a dreaded flat pack. I think the best bet is for me to choose Oak Furniture and get some really gorgeous pieces that are soft looking and add a sort of enchanted feel to the room if you know what I mean. To be honest it would also be nice to have bedroom furniture that matches rather than random bits I collect over the years.
I also think that a floor can make a huge difference to a room and how it comes across. I took a look at Lifestyle Flooring UK and really liked some of the options available. They had wood, vinyl, carpets and laminate. In an ideal world, I’d go for a gorgeous maple floor or something like that but as I am in rented, I think their laminate options would be best. They have so many different shades, finishes, options and shapes I’m sure I’ll find something I like…perhaps the grey!
So what do you think of my light, cloud, floaty, ethereal bedroom idea? I just want a place that when I walk into it is like pure relaxation for me. I suppose at some point in the future I may be fortunate enough to find someone to share my bedroom with but until then it is definitely a space that is all about me. Well…. kind of! I will of course be getting a nice double bed for when my little munchkin decides to crawl in for a cuddle too!
What would your dream room be? Have you managed to create it already?

A room like a cloud sounds amazing! I want that for my room too!
Sounds wonderful… it’s amazing how your mood changes when you’re around soft colours and textures. Good luck!

that bedroom looks amazing Katie! I used to be a just slap on some paint decorator but as I’ve hit my mid 30s I’ve tried wallpaper! gasp! #ablogginggoodtime
I love this idea—we’ve been recently updating our bedroom, and it’s so fun!

I love the idea of a bedroom like a cloud! Come to think of it, I’ve never designed my own bedroom yet, although I’ve been through a few over the years. I designed my son’s room a couple of years ago in our rented house here in Ireland, and it still looks really nice, even if I say so myself! Annie Sloan’s chalk paint has been my best friend since then – it’s amazing what you can do with a lick of paint!
Good luck with your project! x

Gorgeous!! I want that room too! And I am laughing about the idea of Olympic Pinning! My mom would also be a contender! #ablogginggoodtime
I love the idea of a light, calming space where you can go to escape.
I like my bedroom because it is a nice combination of myself and my husband. It is by no means my dream room, it is nothing special, but I do like it.
Sign me up for Olympic Pinning! I love the idea of your room, made me realise I need to do the same to my own bedroom! #ablogginggoodtime
It looks beautiful. Believe it or not, my husband (a very manly man), has far stronger ideas on decorating the house than I do and I really can’t be bothered to fight him on it. Our house tends to be very brown, beige and cream. One day – when I grow up (I’m 35) – I will get a room of my own to decorate just how I want. Ahh … the dreams.

That idea sounds amazing. It is great when you’ve decorated / designed yourself. You stand back and think I did this! #ablogginggoodtime

Oh I so don’t blame you, having your own space how you want it would be lovely. I love the sound of a cloud, sounds just how a room should be. I am also a big fan of soft colours and pastels. I hope to see it when it’s finished…in a non creepy way… #ablogginggoodtime
What a beautiful room! So cozy and calm. So bright too! I have to say though, I love your blanket/comforter the best….now that looks like a cloud! Gorgeous! #ablogginggoodtime
