I’ve been blogging for six months now and this question has cropped up in my mind countless times. What makes a blog a success? I’ve read lots of blogs over the past few months, and tried to think about what I love about them. Sometimes I’ve been inspired to write more, or to try something new like vlogging. Sometimes I look at the style and layout of the blog and it acts as a little nag
that I could improve mine more.
At first I thought that to make a blog successful, you should be getting higher stats and making money from it. For a few weeks I made my best efforts to monetise my little blog and when I got approached for sponsored posts, I was excited to be making money from my writing; it felt like this was the fruits of my hard work. I know a few bloggers who do a fantastic job of this; I read their posts and have absolutely no idea that the content is sponsored until I reach the disclaimer at the bottom of the page. But having reached my personal goal of being paid for my writing, I still didn
’t feel like a success.
Suddenly, I realised – success is how you feel about it, your own barometer for achievement. To one person, it might be getting thousands of page views a week, to another it might be making enough money from your blog to be able to pay the bills…which is no mean feat. To others perhaps it would be winning an award and getting the recognition from your peers after the late nights and many hours in front of the laptop screen.
To me, it is this: that one comment, where your words meant something to someone. It doesn’t happen to me often, but occasionally someone leaves a little message on my blog to let me know that they are truly reading what I write, that they relate to me. That makes it worth it and trumps any stat or ranking I will ever receive. It reminds me why I started writing this blog, and why I continue to write week after week.
That’s the best thing about blogging, it’s your journey and no one else’s – you get to decide what feels like a success and feel proud of yourself for all you have achieved. My little blog hasn’t yet made that huge splash but I try to always write from the heart and to think that those words are a comfort to just one person makes it feel like a success to me.

Great idea for a series. Thanks Bridie for writing this, I enjoyed reading it. I can relate to the feeling of having someone post a comment on something I’ve written. Although usually when I see the message that someone has commented, it turns out to be spam!

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I worry so much about stats and used to think success = brand work and paid posts. But success isn’t always about money. I totally agree, measures of success is different from person to person. That one meaningful comment can make all the difference and inspire us to push further and try harder. Don’t you find that your measure of success can vary depending on how you are feeling that day? Or is that just me?
