How to Get Your Baby or Toddler to Sleep

Did you know that after about 12-15 weeks of being a really terrible sleeper, Alyssa actually started sleeping through. It was AY-Mazing! I’d have to get her to sleep on me and then transfer her over and I’d go to bed at the same time but she pretty much slept through. I didn’t tell anyone at first as I was worried I would jinx it, but after a week of her doing it again and again, I allowed myself to breathe a sigh of relief that the really hard part was over and that I could finally stop my eyes from hurting due to lack of sleep and really settle into motherhood. It was brilliant – after a few days I actually began to look human and after a month I was loving life and enjoying my daughter even more than before.

BOOM. CRASH. BANG. WALLOP.

It all ended and now at 20 months old, she still wakes up in the night and on good days, I resemble something that used to be human and on bad days – uhh let’s not go there. It was safe to say, I needed some help…

Don’t get me wrong, we have good and bad nights and I did some sleep training a while back ( you can read all about that in “Sleep: We Did It Our Way!”) and it generally really helped. Again she slept through the night solidly for a month and now I am lucky if sha little brunette girl asleep on a bed with beige sheets in a navy tshirt cuddling a bunnye does it once every fortnight. Her nighttime antics vary from just a quick wake-up call, needing to be put back to where she normally sleeps or a slurp of drink and passing out again to wailing for up to two hours or managing to get infant hiccups and me having to go back in repeatedly to settle her in order not to disturb the rest of the house. I have finally accepted by state of permanent exhaustion but definitely think some improvement can be made.

The wonderfa white wicker hamper open with some dried flowers in a purple blacket tied with a white bow and 3 purple bottles of baby bath products - bubbles, wash and massage oilul people over at Johnsons asked me if I would be interested in trying out their new Bedtime Baby Sleep App (available for free download for i-phone and android) to see if this would help me sort out Alyssa’s sleeping problems. Unfortunately, I have never been one for the cry it out technique, so I am always keen to try something new that doesn’t involve this – they even sent me over this gorgeous hamper full of their full range of night-time products including their baby wash, baby bath and massage oil all of which are scented with lavender to help soothe and calm a baby close to bed-time. So, what is this app you ask?! Well….

“FREE baby sleep app at your fingertips. JOHNSON’S® BEDTIME™ baby sleep app helps you track and learn about your baby’s sleep habits, and provides a sleep-analysis tool with recommendations on how to help improve your baby’s sleep. As your baby grows their sleep habits change, starting to establish a bedtime routine early on can help support these changes. The BEDTIME™ baby sleep app can be used to help you develop and monitor your baby’s bedtime routine.”

I definitely think having a routine is a good idea and actually when I stopped and thought about it, Alyssa had been getting so good with her sleeping that I began to relax her routine and think that’s where I was going wrong. I have been using the app for a week – yes you do need to remember to pop on and let it know when your child is sleeping but you can also customise and set reminders for a screenshot of the baby app showing the stats collected about your baby's sleepthe bedtime routine aspects too which is quite handy – especially when you get caught up in things and lose track of time. This week, not at the beginning of it but towards the end, she has slept through TWICE, which is actually unheard of in the past few months and after her having been poorly is definitely welcome.

I am going to continue using the app and I am hoping that it will help me get a few more full nights sleep with the help of the lovely products we received too. Alyssa has always had a massage after her bath but again because I hadn’t got any recently she had missed this and because she enjoys the spray she had been having showers as these are a lot quicker but I can see now not the best at calming her down because she thinks they are a game so I have been making a conscious effort to go for bath and calm rather than splashing fun!

Alyssa has always had a white noise monitor that triggers when she stirs too but this week we have also tried using some of the lullabies and ambient sounds that come with the app – from the suggestion of the app after answering questions and getting her sleep score. So fingers crossed that this may actually be working and that in the next few weeks, with the help of Johnsons, I will have a sleeping daughter!

  30. Mine are gnerally good at sleeping, it’s the bed hopping that drives me mad, but anything for some actual sleep right.
    #ablogginggoodtime

  31. I wish I’d known about this when my second daughter was little – we had 2 and a half years of being up 6-8 times with her, and I’d have tried anything. In the end we succumbed to a sleep specialist which did work but it was hard work as she’d got into such habits of waking up and expecting us to come. I feel for you so much with lack of sleep – I was deranged! I hope it works and you get your sleep back as with a bit of sleep the world is a much brighter place. #ablogginggoodtime

  32. Petite Words says:

A baby sleep app, WOW! #ablogginggoodtime

  33. Tubbs says:

Now I’ve got a teenager, I need the opposite – something that makes them not sleep! 🙂 Good luck to everyone entering. It looks a brilliant prize 🙂

  34. Jayne Townson says:

Yes, sometimes. Thanks for the lovely giveaway.

  35. Solange says:

Yes, luckily. She’s a good little sleeper.

  36. Wow, never heard of a baby sleep app! There really is an app for EVERYTHING these days, isn’t there? Ah, my Little Man was never the best at sleep either – I would’ve given this a shot though. Good luck with the sleep:)

  37. Great giveaway. I have just stopped breastfeeding Zach during the day so he now gets NO sleep unless in my arms or pushchair. It has affected his night time sleep too 🙁 #abloggingoodtime

  38. Chloe says:

I’m very lucky in that both of mine have always been amazing sleepers but this is a fab post #ablogginggoodtime

  39. I am still trying to get my three-year-old to sleep! Ha!
    #ablogginggoodtime

  40. Manny says:

I love the Johnsons bedtime range. Smells gorge! Bedtime for my little girl is milk bottle… and then her dummy – not ideal but gets us through for now (I’m dreading dummy weaning lol) #ablogginggoodtime

  41. Aleena Brown says:

We use the bedtime cream, at the very least it smells great!! Fingers crossed for you the app works! #ablogginggoodtime

  42. What a lovely basket of goodies – the app sounds great – I may need to try it for twin 1 – she is a monkey still when it comes to sleeping – I am sooooo tired….. #ablogginggoodtime xx

  43. Stephanie says:

I haven’t thought about using an app, but getting a routine going has been the hardest part for us. May have to check it out. #ablogginggoodtime

  44. She is a beauty of a little one! And an app! Why of course. 9 years ago when Big broke into the world, I was so desperate, I thought we should give her the remote and make a run for it. Of course, I was sleep deprived, depraved, demented… ( loving years later, she sleeps just fine… And my bank of sleep hours is like my bank of cash. DEFICIT. Is there an app for that? <3 #ablogginggoodtime

  45. Really useful post, I’m going to share with my friends who have babies #ablogginggoodtime

  46. Rebecca Howells (@PeanutHog) says:

My nephew goes through periods of not sleeping

  47. Kat says:

You’ll have to let us know how you get on. I’m sceptical about all sleep aids because we’ve tried so many and none have worked. We just take every night as it comes and live in hope for the day she finally sleeps through (she’s 16 months and still no sign…) #ablogginggoodtime

  48. Kelly Hirst says:

My little girl is a really good sleeper – she loves her sleep!

  49. Diane Carey says:

I am wanting this for my granddaughter who is due to be born on June 1st. I’m hoping she is going to be a good sleeper, because my daughter will be on her own all week apart from the weekend, as her partner works away

  50. Donna W says:

My little one has good nights and bad. He’s been sleeping through the night on and off since he was about a year old. He’s now almost 2 but still wakes occasionally with a nightmare or sometimes just wakes in the middle of the night for a couple of hours. Thankfully he usually settles himself again if he does this as we have another baby due in a few weeks and I’m going to be like a zombie!
Sticking to a bedtime routine definitely helps him to sleep better and the Johnsons Bedtime Bath is a great help too.

  51. Rebecca says:

We too use Johnsons bedtime products at bathtime… little man has always loved them and the lavender scent really relaxes him before sleep! #ablogginggoodtime

  52. Rebecca Powell says:

    Usually but not always!!!

  53. Nicola Farrel says:

My little girl sleeps now we have a good routine thankfully hoping the next one sleeps as well!

  54. Jaki says:

The app is definitely something I would have used had it been around when Little Man was smaller. I swear by a good routine, it never let us down. #ablogginggoodtime

  55. Rich Tyler says:

    On his terms!

  56. Cathryn Crawshaw says:

Ava sleeps if routine is kept to – fingers crossed

  57. Diana says:

    Most of the nights 🙂

  58. Sounds a good app. I’m all about the bedtime routine. Had one from when my daughter was 6 weeks old and she’s alwasy been a good sleeper, unless she’s unwell or in a new place/holiday (typical!) We’ve used their products but it doesn’t agree with her skin so we just use their shampoo now and different bath stuff xx #ablogginggoodtime

  59. ellie spider says:

H wont sleep in her own room but when she does fall asleep shes out like a light and sleeps for a good 6-8 hours solidly

  60. Ema J Lowe says:

yes my little man does sleep well now, he goes from 8pm until 8-9am

  61. carol boffey says:

    lovely prize liked and shared

  62. Lynsey Buchanan says:

I don’t have a baby – I am entering on behalf of my friend who’s baby is a great wee sleeper.

  63. Kim Neville says:

My son usually wakes up early and gets in our bed

  64. Natalie Crossan says:

I had to contact the sleep charity for help with mine but thankfully now yes x

  65. My teens slept through from an early age but those times when it didn’t work , music was always a good alternative. They both had a wind up music globe in their room and it worked a treat. #ablogginggoodtime

  66. Crummy Mummy says:

We’re having a nightmare time with Little B at the moment – we’ve literally tried everything…nothing works!! #ablogginggoodtime

  67. I have been so lucky with Peachy. She is an excellent sleeper and rarely needs me at night. Sorry for the super late comment. #ablogginggoodtime
